Coming out affected Martina's earnings
by John DuAne Graves Lesbian tennis star Martina Navratilova was interviewed July 25 on the Sunday edition of ABC's Good Morning America about a September 22 celebrity-pro tennis tournament with Elton John and Billie Jean King to benefit the Elton John AIDS Foundation. Elizabeth Taylor, John McEnroe, Don Henley and Chris Evert will also participate. When asked if her political activism had affected her earning potential, Navratilova said yes. She went on to say, "My sexuality definitely has cost me a lot of money, but that's okay with me. I'd rather be who I am and make less." When asked her opinion of the president's new policy on gays in the military she said, "He wussed out on us."
Barbra Streisand will team with fivetime Oscar nominee Glen Close to produce a two-hour NBC movie about the story of U.S. Army Col. Margarethe Cammermeyer. Col. Cammermeyer was about to become the highest ranking woman in the armed services until she was discharged when she came out of the closet as a lesbian four years ago. Close will star, and Col. Cammermeyer will participate in the movie, which is scheduled to air in the fall of 1994. NBC president Warren Littlefield said that "In the tradition of Emmy award winners Roe vs. Wade and An Early Frost, The Col. Margarethe Cammermeyer Story reflects NBC's commitment to focusing attention on tough social issues and to bringing the stars back to NBC." Littlefield went on to say that the long production schedule was due to NBC "putting quality over timeliness."

ernment foot-dragging in the early days of the AIDS crisis, is fuming over revisions made to the film by HBO at Shilts' urging. Shilts suggested the revisions to balance positive gay portrayals against the negative images emphasized in the Spottiswoode version. Executive producer Aaron Spelling, who spent years trying to get the film made and deferred his salary to AIDS support groups, said, "We started out to do Randy's version of the book, not the director's vision. And they differed. And we went back to Randy to see what he wanted. It was not only about doing AIDS, but about trying to fight some homophobia that still exists because of AIDS, and we felt it went in the other direction sometimes."
TV Guide was right when they said in their August 6 issue that "Families in Distress" was the networks' theme-of-the-year for their movies-of-the-week. TV-movie veteran Lee Grant will star in Under Heat, which tells the story of two estranged brothers, one living with AIDS and the other an alcoholic and heroin addict, who reunite to visit their cancer-stricken mother. Should be plenty of tearful piano music in this one.
Lesbian actor-comedian Lily Tomlin has joined the cast of ABC's In a New Light '93, the network's second entertainment-information special about AIDS, which will air September 4 at 8 pm. Tomlin will portray her Ernestine the Telephone Operator character who will be working an AIDS hotline.
The August issue of the African-American magazine Essence carries a discussion between two best friends, a gay man and a straight woman, about their lives, their loves, their pain and their friendship.
k. d. lang has been embraced by Nashville's music community, contrary to earlier reports that the community was against her after she came out of the closet and took a stand against meat eating and the cattle industry. Earlier this year, lang told USA Today that country radio had shunned her but she now holds no grudge against her country buddies and says she could return to the genre. lang is profiled in a feature interview in the August 3 edition of Rolling Stone magazine.

Variety Show romance culminates in marriage
The emcee of the 18th Annual Womyn's Variety Show and the winner of the Lesbian-Gay Community Center's 1992 Talent Show tied the knot recently. Diane Hobus and Michele Colopy were joined in a union ceremony Sunday, July 11. A Unitarian minister officiated at the ceremony held in a beautiful lodge in Sand Run Metro Park in Akron.
Michele wore a handmade white satin gown with an overlay lace bodice and sleeves. She carried a cascading bouquet of cymbidium orchids, lavender roses, and white freesia. Diane wore a white full dress suit with a lavender rose boutonniere. Ushers Tom and Kay each wore a lavender rose boutonniere as well.
Diane's daughter, brother, and sister-in-law were present, as were many of her students and friends. Michele's extended family, friends, and co-workers also joined in their celebration. Recessional music was a song composed by Diane for Michele, "My One and Only Love." A reception was held directly afterward and included a dance by the new couple and cutting of the three-tier white wedding cake decorated with wildflowers and lavender roses. Highlight of the afternoon was a toast to Diane and Michele
made by Diane's brother, Bill. The new couple spent their honeymoon at Kimbilio Farm.
The couple will reside in Akron. Diane will continue teaching and performing piano in Northern Ohio. Michele works at the Cooperative Market in Akron while pursuing a master's degree in arts management.
